…are InDesign and free. This site has both.

http://designm.ag/tutorials/indesign/

The site offers 40 free InDesign tutorials. Many aren’t immediately applicable for those involved with newspaper design — ad, brochure, tickets, for example — but wait: you never know.

First, all sorts of the tips and tricks can be used in newspaper designs if you are creative in your thinking. The magazine cover tutorial, for instance, has some ideas that could be used on a feature front. There are good tutorials on paragraph rules and baseline grids, too.

Second, you never know when that newspaper job will end. Should that occur, not only will the resume grid tutorial come in very handy, but you might become a hesitant entrepreneur and need some ideas for ads and brochures, too.

Don’t ever turn your back on good ideas, especially when they are free.
