Fixing an InDesign quirk

Customizing InDesign and other programs makes your life much easier. Going over your Preferences selections is an easy way to make sure the program is optimized for the way you work.

One of the mini-bugs (not really a bug, but if it “bugs” you, it might as well be) in InDesign for me was always when I would draw a frame for a non-text element and then accidentally click the text tool in it. This made it a text frame, which was annoying. I always had to delete it and start again.

While poking around in the various Preferences, I discovered a fix. First, the way to convert it back to a graphics frame is to go to Object > Content > Graphic, after you have selected the frame.

Better yet, in Preferences, you can turn off the action totally by going to Preferences > Type and under type options, de-select the  “Type tool converts frames to text frames” option. Do this when no file is open, as always, if you want this to be a universal change in the way you work.

See example below.
