A mountain is well designed
News Design School is an educational site aimed mainly at journalists at small daily and weekly newspapers. Its mission was to offer newspaper design training and assistance to individuals or entire staffs at an inexpensive price. It is now closed. NDS still has free tips and information linked to at the Samples page. I am leaving up all the information in hopes it will help a newbie somewhere.
I am currently a journalism professor and formerly a professional journalist. I have been a consultant, workshop leader and speaker on newspaper design and typography for more than 20 years. I have written two books and more than 100 articles, some of which have been cited by authors on four continents.
My focus has been on weekly and small daily newspaper design, and many projects have led to state-wide and national awards for the papers. I have made presentations on design at the American Press Institute, for The Poynter Institute (for whom I did the research design for its first color study), for the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, and for numerous state-wide press associations, such as Wyoming, Texas, South Carolina, New York and Virginia.
Check out my profile at LinkedIn or at my writing/editing web site and blog, which is the focus of my work from now on.
